This is a frame from my absolute favourite film, Auntie Mame, based on a true story about a woman who lived her life to the fullest.  I am right behind her at queuing up to be seated at that banquet, at least I would like to feel like I am.  When you reach a certain age, it is easy to think what might have been.

What would have happened if I stayed with my cheating starter husband and had kids? I am guessing it would not have been a pretty picture.  I was brave enough to get out of dodge, that is, move from New York to London and start pretty much from scratch. I still wonder if I would have been better off if I stayed in one city for the duration of my career or would I have ended up miserable.

I am sure that most people think about what might have been or if we just did that one thing differently and we kick ourselves. I think women, in general, kick themselves too much.  We can be extremely hard on ourselves and too judgemental of others.

The times, when I am feeling low and going down that dark road of ‘what ifs’ I think it is a good idea to refocus on the positives. It isn’t easy to try to be positive about yourself when you are feeling low so I would like to propose a little writing exercise.

 Write Your Own Biography

In my job as a photographic producer, when I am looking hair and make-up agencies to hire talent, they always have a biography of the artist to give you a taste of their personality.

I think we all should take a coffee break and write down our accomplishments. It doesn’t have to be long or fancy. It could be a list of what we have done in our lives. We need to remember that even when things are not going our way, we have achieved something. The biography does not have to be filled with high-flying achievements as life is made of lots of baby steps to get to the big goal but sometimes we trip and forget how far we have come.

A few of the achievements on my list are:  being brave and taking a chance on the man I met on the Tube (we are still going strong 9.5 years later), writing a book and putting myself out there, giving up my settled life in New York for the unknown in London and that is just a few on my list.

What is on your list? Be brave and leave a comment.
